Dupuytren’s contracture

When thickening in the palm develops, which then increases in size cross joints in the hand leading to bent fingers.

Do these symptoms sound familiar?

  • Swelling and thickening of skin in the palm
  • A bent finger or fingers
  • Inability to straighten finger/ fingers
  • Poking your eye when you wash your face
  • Cannot put your hand in your pocket
  • Difficulty putting gloves on
  • Father, mother, siblings had the same bent fingers
  • Fingers become a nuisance

These symptoms are typical of Dupuytren’s disease . It is when abnormal thickened tissue grows in the hand. It creates a cord when it crosses a joint causing it to bend. So preventing the finger straightening.

How I help treat Dupuytren’s contracture?

Prior to recommending a treatment I will confirm the diagnosis through an in depth review of your story, symptoms and examination during our initial consultation.

I will then decide if tests are required to aid the diagnosis such as X-rays, MRI, CT scans and blood tests. I will then formulate a treatment plan with yourself according to the diagnosis and your views. This often involves hand therapy and other simple treatment options before surgery is considered.
